GLOSSARY OF KEY WORDS

What does it all mean?

Accountgive the reasons for
Example 1: Account for your attendance at school
-  The Olds made me come
-    I’ll get a detention for wagging it
-    To get a good mark in the HSC to get into Uni/get a job

Example 2: Account for the changing composition of religious adherence in Australia since 1945:
-   Post WWII immigration allowed non-English speaking migrants
-   Disbanding of White Australia Policy
-   Growth of multicultural Australia

Analyse – identify the different parts and look at the different relationships between them
Example 1: Analyse the importance of attendance at school
-  The Olds will nag if I don’t go
-  Mum made me come because she wants me to do well in life
-  I want to get a good HSC result to get a good job and/or go to uni.

Example 2: Analyse the significance of land rights for Aboriginal spirituality.
-   Strong link between the land and Aboriginal Dreaming
-   Dispossession from the land removes the links to the Dreaming
-   Loss of Dreaming means culture and spirituality difficult to pass on


Assess – make a judgement about a certain thing giving reasons such as quality, value, or results
Example 1: Assess the importance of school attendance
-          Mum likes me go, so when I co-operate it pays off because she lets me go to parties on the week ends
-          Going to school is a chance to get invitations to weekend parties
-   I can get class notes when I attend school
-   It allows me to be an active member of my school community

Example 2: Assess the importance of the formation of the Uniting Church to the ecumenical movement.
-   Showed the similarity of beliefs between variants especially Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregationalist
-   Showed the willingness of Christian variants to work together
-   Paved the way for other variants to examine common practices and beliefs



Demonstrate - show by example

Example 1: Demonstrate how Year 12 is the best year at school
-          Year 12 students have developed good relationships with their teachers
-          It’s the last year of school before uni or the workforce
-          Year 12 are the leaders of the school
-          Most people in Year 12 have great 18th birthday parties.

Example 2: Demonstrate how Baptism reflects the beliefs of Christianity
-          Baptism is necessary for salvation
-          Baptism imbues the individual with the Holy Spirit
-          Baptism is a spiritual rebirth in the name of Jesus.



Describe – give the characteristics and features of something

Example 1: Describe the requirements to get a HSC.
                   - Have completed both preliminary and HSC courses in certain subjects
-   Registered with the Board of Studies
-   Completed examinations set by the Board of Studies

Example 2: Describe the progress of the Land Rights movement in Australia
-   Vincent Ligiari and the Tent Embassy
-    Mabo Decision (1992)
-   Native Title Act (1994)
-   Wik Judgement (1996)


Discuss – identify issues and present points for and/or against
Example1: Discuss the relevance of school uniform to a successful HSC.
-   Order and discipline
-   Keeps your mind focussed on school work and not fashion
 however
-   more comfortable clothes means happier students
-   individuality is important and nurtures creativity
Example 2: Discuss the contribution of a significant person in Christianity drawn from ………
-   X contributed greatly to sacred texts
-   X acted as a role model
-   X was divisive and not always regarded positively in all variants
-   X is nor remembered in an increasingly secular society




Evaluate – make a judgement (or determine the value of) based on a criteria
Example 1: Evaluate the importance of the Graduation Ball for the end of the HSC year.
-   Celebration and ritual for an important stage of life
-   A secular rite of passage
-   Allows parents to celebrate with their child
-   Therefore, it is a good thing to celebrate to be involved in
Example 2: Evaluate the significance of the Mabo case for the Land Rights Movement
-   Overturned legal doctrine of Terra Nullius
-   Focussed public attention on Aboriginal history and spirituality
-   Recognised the inextricable connection of Aboriginal people to the land


Examine - Inquire into

Example 1: Examine the relationship between study and success at school
-          If I study for exams I achieve a better result than if I don’t
-          Study enables me to understand things better and I achieve better overall
-          If I have studied, I know how the questions the teacher asks are relevant

Example 2: Examine the relationship between the Dreaming and traditional aboriginal life
-          The Dreaming provides an inalienable link between the land and the people
-          The Dreaming defines the relationship between individuals with in a group
-          The Dreaming provides a link between the past present and the future.



Explain – relate the cause and effect providing the why and/or how

Example 1: Explain the procedure if you are sick when an assessment task in the HSC is due to be handed in.
-   Contact school to let your teacher and/or Curriculum Co-ordinator know you are absent because you are sick or you will be penalised
-   When you return to school, hand in the task to your teacher or the Curriculum Co-ordinator  as soon as you arrive
-   If you have a number of days away you may need to have a medical certificate attached

Example 2: Explain the trends in religious adherence in Australian post 1945 as shown in the census figures.
-   Rise in no religion
-   Denominational switching
-   Secularisation
-   Importance of immigration




Identify - recognise and name
Example 1: Identify the means of achieving a band 6 in the HSC
-   Attend School
-   Study and apply yourself consistently
-   Prepare for the exam by practicing your exam technique
-   Be able to use your knowledge to answer the question
Example 2: Identify the changes in the composition of religious adherence in Australia since 1945
-          The proportion of individuals identifying themselves as Christians has declined
-          There are more people who profess no religion
-          Adherence to Asian religions has increased since 1970

Outline - Sketch in general terms; indicate the main features of
Example 1: Outline your normal school day
-          Arrive at school at 9.05am
-          Attend lessons with  breaks for recess and lunch
-          Go home and study for 5 hours
Example 2: Outline the main features of Christian Baptism
-          Anointing with oil
